Big Music Will Surrender, But Not Until At Least 2011
By 2013 (maybe as early as 2011) it’ll make sense for the labels to finally reorganize their business models around the reality created by the Internet and person to person file sharing services. But until then, he says, the spreadsheets and financial models dictate that suing customers and partners just makes too much sense. I had a surprisingly candid lunch conversation last week with a big music label executive, and a good part of our talk focused on the future of music. I

The Next Crisis: Coming in 2011
We may be in a precarious position by 2011.
Bill Bill Achtmeyer, my long-time partner and Chairman and Managing Partner of the Parthenon Group , agrees that macroeconomics eventually win out and we should carefully brace ourselves for what might loom ahead — the next crisis in 2011. think we have six quarters that will be very promising between now and the end of 2010, and then I think we are going to hit huge headwinds in 2011 and 2012.
With the Dow reapproaching a five-figure level, we have felt at least some temporary economic reprieve in recent months.

New York Times Confirms Pay Model for 2011
The New York Times confirmed today that beginning in early 2011 the company will adopt a paid model for its web site, NYTimes.com . Disclosure: ReadWriteWeb is a syndication partner of the New York Times.
The move comes at a time when much of the newspaper industry is searching for a way to stop the bleeding brought on by the Internet and the much smaller revenue streams provided by online advertising.
Many fear that putting content behind a wall of pay-only use will just drive readers to go to other sources, but perhaps the Times' approach will help to combat that issue.

Oprah Winfrey and Your Leadership Brand
When it comes to cultivating a leadership brand, look no further than Oprah Winfrey, who recently announced that she would be ending her popular talk show in 2011. As she told her business partner Gayle King years ago, "I don't know what the future holds but I know who holds it."
All leaders have a brand. Whether that term is used or not, leaders have an identifiable persona that is a reflection of what they do and how others perceive them.

A New Business Model For Skype: Turning Phone Numbers On The Web Into Paid Ads
Its revenues last year were $551 million, but it wants to get to $1 billion by 2011. Click it, and you call the business you were looking for, and the call is paid for by either the business or the Yellow Pages partner. Presumably, the Yellow Pages partners would only pay for numbers in their directories, so Skype would have to come up with a way to indicate which calls are free and which ones are not. While eBay prepares to unload Skype via a sale or IPO next year , it is busy looking for new ways to make money off its 405 million global users. They already account for
