Foodspotting Is A Location-Based Game That Will Make Your Mouth Water
So the thought became, why not crowdsource it? Or, thanks to Foursquare’s relatively new API, you can also check-in to a venue simply by foodspotting (yes, the service hopes the name becomes a common verb).
The idea was a way to show people the best food in Japan beyond sushi — to literally show them, in picture form. Then the thought morphed into writing to a book, where the best food in the world was shown.

Four Steps to Gov 2.0: A Guide for Agencies
It prioritizes the steps, and finally, introduces the idea of an API that creates a virtuous cycle by returning crowdsourced value back to the agency.

Search, Monetize and Fact Check YouTube Transcripts with Speakertext
The service uses the YouTube API and replaces the YouTube player with a Speakertext player. The company will also crowdsource transcription accuracy in a method similar to that of the Worldwide Lexicon Project .
You've probably never heard of Matt Mireles and Bjorn Liljequist but with a $4000 dollar budget and an engineering team paid in iPhones, the two already have Meebo founder Seth Sternberg as their advisor and praise from VC Fred Wilson . The duo's filtering service Speakertext will launch at tomorrow's New York Tech Meetup and the concept is a simple one - to

The Future of Our Cities: Open, Crowdsourced, and Participatory
What if they then crowdsourced ideas on how best to do this ? They refuse to even make their timetable information public via API, citing legal and security concerns, and seeming to harbor a feeling that there's money to be made from that data.
To Guest blogger John Geraci has spent the last six years making life in cities better with the use of web technologies. His latest project, DIYcity.org, has web developers and urban planners all over the world teaming up to create open source tools for residents of cities everywhere.

How Twitter and Crowdsourcing Are Reshaping Recruiting
As a result, the job description was crowdsourced, and anyone with an interest was invited to post qualifications to the job role on Idea X , a forum for Best Buy customers and employees. For instance, the revamped job description included a requirement that the Senior Manager "understand the following acronyms: RSS, SEM, SEO, PPC, CPM, CPC, LOL, IMHO, WTF, API, B2C, B2B, CTR, IM, PV, RON, WWW, TTYL, LMAO, ROTFLMAO, WYSIWYG and, most importantly, RTFM." Why don't more companies use Twitter to hire the right job candidates?
Most companies still think of Twitter as a marketing

The Library of the Commons: Rise of the Infodex
In other words, these are services that have defined the 'IT' to the point that we can now pretty much take their utility and availability for granted (typically via API access and/or embed codes with some form of customization wizard).

Google Maps Ditches Tele Atlas in Favor of Street View Cars and Crowdsourcing
Now, Google will use its own data , which it will supplement with data from government sources and a crowdsourcing approach.
Last week's update to Google Maps introduced new ways to report errors for Google Maps users, so Google is clearly thinking about using a crowdsourcing approach to mapping for Google Maps. By providing its own maps and an API for others to use these maps, Google could potentially become a major competitor to Tele Atlas After a flurry of activity around Google Maps over the last few weeks, it now looks like Google is also ditching Tele Atlas as its data provider for Google Maps in the US in favor of a do-it-yourself approach.

FestBuzz: Crowdsourcing reviews from Twitter
Go help a great Edinburgh startup by telling all your mates about it and, if you're at the Festival, tell us what you think of the shows you're at ;-)
FestBuzz analyses what Twitter users are saying about Festival shows and creates crowd-sourced reviews and "five star" ratings that are available on the site or through its API. The site and API is being produced by Affect Labs Ltd , a small Edinburgh University-based startup led by founder Jennie Lees. The 2009 Edinburgh Festivals are all about tweeting as newspapers cut back on their reviewer staff. Earlier this year in my

Seeing the Future of Mapping in Crimespotting
Stamen had been waiting for crime data all this time and with the launch of DataSF they are able to use an official API for crime data .
SF 1) Crowdsourced Maps - When Oakland Crimespotting launched it used Microsoft Live maps (which would now be called Bing). Crimespotting has a read API ; I hope Stamen adds Write capabilities.
I'd This week Stamen Design released San Francisco Crimespotting. It's a crime map and notification system that allows for time and crime trend analysis.

I’ve Seen The Future Of Mashups, And Its Name Is PizzaShare
What could be yummier than a mashup using the Google Maps API to crowdsource and pinpoint the best pizza places in America? Also, the downside of crowdsourcing is that you have to at least try to prevent gaming; PizzaShare lets you vote (share) on a pizza place as much as you wish.
Thanks to PizzaShare , you’ll hopefully never have to wonder where to get them slices because you can just enter the city or zip code and go for the one that has the biggest circle. It’s as easy as pie (you knew that was coming, right?).

Not only do we have examples of great online applications and systems to point to and use for best practices, but the latest tools, frameworks, development platforms, APIs, widgets, and so on, which are largely developed today in the form of open source over the Internet, tend to accumulate many of these new best practices.
