Big Data Is Less About Size, And More About Freedom
Do you need all your data available online to back queries from a web application or a service API?
The sexy job in the next ten years will be statisticians… The ability to take data—to be able to understand it, to process it, to extract value from it, to visualize it, to communicate it
Editor’s note : Big Data has been around for a long time between credit card transactions, phone call records and financial markets. Companies like AT&T, Visa, Bank of America, Ebay, Google, Amazon and more have massive databases they mine for competitive advantage.

Questetra Helps Managing Business Processes Via The Web, Supports Google Apps
That’s a critical question for many companies, which usually rely on business process management (BPM) solutions to visualize, streamline, and implement predefined workflows. Just last month , enterprise SaaS behemoth Salesforce.com rolled out a new BPM tool, Visual Process Manager – only to be now challenged by a small startup called Questetra , which thinks its eponymous solution can stack up.
Which employee does what, when, how and with which tools? The way Questetra’s BPM suite (and similar products) work is that users chart business workflows to identify

Five Ways For Twitter's Advertising to Not Suck
Ads Must Be Relevant Its irritating when you get presented with ads that have absolutely no relevance to you--they're a visual and mental distraction from the task in hand, and when you're interacting with Twitter in such short bursts this could irritate users. We can guess that Twitter's ad plans are centered on its website, but in order to reach the maximum audience (and hence make more money from advertising partners) it would be smart if the ad system was connected to Twitter's API so that third party developers could work it into their apps. Twitter is apparently due to bring an end to years of speculation about its money -earning plans by announcing an advertising platform today.

Twitter: A Marketer's Duct Tape
As Chris pointed out on his blog , the range of applications is spectacular, from providing truly instant online commentary for any off-line event, to the visualization of Super Bowl tweets developed by the New York Times , to Pepsi's integration of Twitter with geographic information at the spectacularly popular South by Southwest festival, to Whole Foods tweeting recipes . The interfaces to the capability are simple and well defined in their Applications Programming Interface (API), which makes it easy to plug into their messaging capability.
Duct tape is universally useful because it is incredibly simple, almost infinitely flexible , easily available, and cheap.

How NPR is Embracing Open Source and Open APIs
Daniel Jacobson is in charge making that content available to developers and end users in a wide variety of formats, and has been doing so using an Open API that NPR developed specifically for that purpose. So that includes the website, podcasts, API, mobile sites, HD radios, anything that has some sort of visual component to it. Daniel Jacobson: I manage the News providers, like most content providers, are interested in having their content seen by as many people as possible. But unlike many news organizations, whose primary concern may be monetizing their content,

The Growth of Open APIs: More Evidence That Web Services Drive Network Effects
It's eye opening because of the dramatic growth in bandwidth being consumed by their customers via their various non-visual, data-only Web services. This is spreading Amazon's platform to the far corners of the Internet in the way that Microsoft and IBM did so successfully with their own software platforms a generation ago, albeit in offline form. Figure 1: Amazon's open Web APIs now consume more bandwidth than all their sites combined But what's also interesting is that it's taken nearly eight years for this result to occur for Amazon. A few days ago Amazon Web Services evangelist Jeff Barr released a graph ( Figure 1 below ) showing the growth of the bandwidth used by their global Web sites versus the bandwidth being consumed by their Web services.

Evolution of a Revolution: Visualizing Millions of Iran Tweets
One promising area is data-oriented user interfaces: data and algorithmic analysis in the back-end and direct visualization and navigation in the front-end. With Twitter, the data and API are in place. At its peak, a search for "Iran" on Twitter generated over 100,000 tweets per day and over 8,000 tweets per hour. The plot just below shows the growth in volume of information in the number of tweets per hour.
