Reflecting* on the second half of 2009
Jane Hart, Jon Husband, Harold Jarche, Charles Jennings, Clark Quinn, and I formed the Internet Time Alliance to help organizations innovate in learning. Collaboration gets things done and is the most powerful learning tool in the CLO’s playbook.
Clark Quinn and I gave a one-day workshop on implementing networked learning architecture the day before DevLearn. * If you are not reflecting, you are not learning . Here are some things I learned from in the past six months.

Challenges and Misconceptions of Collaborative and Social Learning in the Workplace
Here’s a five-part podcast on collaborative and social learning in the workplace. Dawn Poulos interviews Harold Jarche, Jay Cross, Clark Quinn, and Charles Jennings. Part 3 question – What do you think the key enablers are for collaborative learning to become truly embraced in a corporate setting as opposed to something that’s done at grassroots level?
The part 1 link is at the bottom.
Part 2 question - From your recent survey, 3 out of 4 CLOs admitted that their people could not keep up with the needs of their business.

Four C’s of digital media
Collaboration
What are the boundary conditions needed to move from Content to Collaboration, from Collaboration to Community, and from Community to Collective Intelligence? Clark Quinn and I have discussed frameworks for social media before and we came up four C’s from a different perspective in a bit of a back-of-the-napkin exercise. Gaurav Mishra wrote a guest blog post at Beth Kanter’s blog, on the 4 C’s of social media , complete with explanations and possible uses of this framework:

Metalearning
I just got through reading Jay's post and article (with Clark Quinn) around Become a chief meta-learning officer – one of the hot list items from two weeks ago. The broader perspective he is talking about is to look beyond formal learning to informal learning, social learning, collaborative learning, and personal learning. What was particularly interesting about his article was the use of the term meta-learning. Wikipedia defines meta-learning (in education) as: The idea of metalearning was originally used by John Biggs (1985) to describe the state of ‘being

Social Learning – Highlights
We released our first white paper, on Social Learning , at the Collaborative Enterprise last week.
Frédéric Cavazza : Social Learning may be defined as follows: “Practices and tools to take advantage of collaborative knowledge sharing and growth”.
Julien Pouget : Social learning can be considered a way of learning that is based on collaborative practices and internet technologies associated with them (wikis, bookmarking, blogs, etc.). For me, the essence of social learning is that as our work becomes more complex, we need faster feedback loops to stay on top of it.

Last Year's Predictions For 2008, Reviewed
Industry pundits are selling decision makers on VR's immersive, distributed, virtual, and collaborative attributes. It helps when somebody explicitly identifies cases where your prediction is being realized. Clark Quinn , Quinnovation , USA Grade: B- Predicted: The cynical: There will continue to be "eLearning Solutions Providers" with no one on the executive/management team who really understands learning; a total LMS/CMS/Portal/eCommunity all-singing, all-dancing solution will be announced, but it still won't be the answer. It's the end of 2008, and while most people are predicting what will happen in 2009 , I look back at those who predicted 2008 .
