GrassRoots Learning, this leading edge pedagogical and teacher-training model has involved more than 20M students in over 40,000 easy and inexpensive on-line collaborative learning projects. VolNet, a extensive collaborative effort of civil society organizations which brought computer technology and Internet access to over 20,000 volunteer and charitable organizations in 3 years. ? Online Learning Environment - 1999
It has two major components: first, a content component, consisting of online texts, graphics, and multimedia, and second, a communications component, consisting of an array of tools for discussion and collaboration. Communication Tools As mentioned above, an array of communication tools is employed on OLe to facilitate discussion and interaction between instructor and students. This is documentation for a learning management system I built at Assiniboine Community College between the years 1995-1999. It does not refer to a currently existing system, as development on OLe was

How crowdsourcing helped Haiti's relief efforts
Once the system was working, InSTEDD (in collaboration with Thompson Reuters) worked on the ground to broadcast the existence of the "4636" short code to as many Haitians as possible using radio and other means. We began pulling in feeds of SMS messages, facilitating their translation and posting feeds of translated messages.
As saddening as it is to reflect Tech-minded volunteers quickly pitched in with a variety of communication and data services in the days following the Haiti earthquake. One company -- crowdsourcing platform CrowdFlower -- repurposed its service as a text-message

How I use social media
It was in “helping” “save” the community after Howard lost funding that I had my first big online facilitation failure. It was my urgency to figure this out that set me on my professional path as a practitioner and learner about online facilitation. This was where I had the amazing opportunity to co-facilitate an online workshop with Mihaela Moussou (now Michele Paradise). This afternoon I’m spending a half hour on a Skype video conversation to share a bit of how I use social media. I

Coming out of the Graphic Facilitation Closet
Graphic Facilitation Workshops
Beyond doing graphic recording myself , I offer two kinds of workshops on the practice of graphic recording and facilitation. One focuses on the use of visuals associated with specific facilitation techniques and group processes, and the other is a simple, hands on introduction to graphic recording, also known as “I CAN DRAW.” 8221; Well, I guess it is time to walk my talk and declare I CAN DRAW. After doing it on the side, teaching it to others, I realized it was time to declare this part of my practice on my website.

Skills for Learning Professionals Part 3
Community Leadership and Facilitation
A subset is online community management but I’ll confess to placing more emphasis both on facilitating vs managing and servant leadership vs top-down leadership. These are seated in well known group facilitation theory and practices with the additional needs of an online environment. It has become clear. I’m long-winded on the topic of new skills for knowledge workers and learning professionals, even if I don’t quite understand what a learning professional is.

Tags: Collaboration Creativity Experience Design Methods Tips & Trick As a systems-thinking, ridiculously rational INTP , I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been told to, “Stop overthinking!” 8221; After all, rational thinking isn’t naturally associated with creativity.

Top 10 Web Collaboration Tools (That Aren't Google Wave) [Lifehacker Top 10]
Lest ye forget, there are plenty of web-based collaboration tools that don't require learning a new way of speaking. TimeBridge This meeting facilitator aims to eliminate the mess of emails and mass confusion over whether it was meeting room 130 at 2pm, or room 230 at 1pm. For a certain kind of work, it's a real time saver, and it makes it easy to respond when your collaborators ask why their masterful lead-in sentence didn't make the cut. ( You've probably heard about a hard-to-get , hugely new service called Google Wave . Here are a few of our (mostly free) favorites.

Smart.fm: How to move from web to mobile
So much so that taking the team on a walk through the neighborhood, mobile-sized sketchbooks in hand, has become a regular part of mobile workshops I’ve facilitated and participated in in the past.

Social Media Planning and Evaluation for NGOs
Over time, most of this material will also be added to the every growing “ KS Toolkit ,” another collaborative resource I’ve pointed to frequently.
Simone Staiger, my frequent collaborator in these efforts, pointed out this quote and URL from Margaret Wheatley that is a good kick off for the topic.
Understanding the value of facilitation of social media interactions - ROI on Community I’ve been co-designing and c0-facilitating a number of workshops for the CGIAR and FAO over the past few years about knowledge sharing, and more recently, this phenomenon people call “social media.”

The Evolution of Collaborative Innovation
For over a dozen years now the concept of collaborative innovation has been at the center of much of my work. The Internet, and all the social media platforms and applications in its wake have been one of the major enablers of collaborative innovation the world has ever known. Then there is my work with Linux, which started around this time ten years ago when we finalized the decision to launch a company-wide Linux initiative . We spent a lot of time It is a common theme in my talks and seminars, as well as in my blog. This is not surprising given the nature of the initiatives

Travel Budget Slashes, Meeting Crunch and Going Virtual
There is no group chat (participants can only chat with the moderator or one other person at a time, thus no horizontal communication nor any easy ability to collectively take notes), there is no visible participant list (thus defeating any community building part of one’s agenda), and there can only be one moderator at a time, reducing the ability to agily collaborate.
