Understanding "learning" - some more thoughts
Harold Jarche looked at these 5 categories and grouped learning into 3 types: directed , self-directed and undirected learning.
Dynamic
learning is defined as rapid, adaptive, collaborative and
self-directed learning at the moment of need."
My colleagues at the Internet Time Alliance have been thinking a lot about what "learning" and being a "learner" means. This has been part of the ongoing discussion we have been having about the hijacking of terms like informal and social learning by "snake oil sellers".

Harold Jarche » Increased complexity needs simplified design
Enabling the integration of collaborative learning with work is a more flexible model than designing courses that are outdated as soon as they’re published.

Gathering Our Collective Resources
I believe that we are going to see a shift of emphasis in corporations away from training individuals towards collaborative methods of group learning. Harold Jarche has done the learning community a service by collecting a list of resources on this important topic and posting them in his blog. There is a lot happening in this area, and Harold is one of the people helping move change forward. (GW) One way that will happen is through the formation of “communities of practice”. GW)

Personal in Personal Knowledge Management
Great dialog between Harold Jarche and Stephen Downes around Harold's PKM process … Stephen Downes wrote in response: … what does the concept of a ‘method’ here imply? It’s a pick-and-choose sort of thing: the way we manage information has a lot to do with the information, and a lot to do with who we are and what we want the information for … Harold responded with Other PKM processes where he shows some other models and states: To be clear, my intention is to show what works for me and perhaps some part of this may work others. That there is a ‘best’ way to manage knowledge an information?

Challenges and Misconceptions of Collaborative and Social Learning in the Workplace
Here’s a five-part podcast on collaborative and social learning in the workplace. Dawn Poulos interviews Harold Jarche, Jay Cross, Clark Quinn, and Charles Jennings. Part 3 question – What do you think the key enablers are for collaborative learning to become truly embraced in a corporate setting as opposed to something that’s done at grassroots level?
The part 1 link is at the bottom.
Part 2 question - From your recent survey, 3 out of 4 CLOs admitted that their people could not keep up with the needs of their business.

Social learning in the enterprise
Whereas early e-learning was all about delivering content, primarily in the form of online courses, produced by experts and managed via learning management systems, Social Learning is about creating and sharing information and knowledge with other people using (often free) social media tools that support a collaborative approach to learning.
The use of online communities and networks, where employees are encouraged to co-create content, collaborate, share knowledge and fully participate in their own learning, is helping to create far more enduring learning experiences.

New skills for learning professionals
Harold Jarche also made the important point that ‘attitude trumps skills’ for a learning professional. TogetherLearn’s Clark Quinn sees the need for a learnscape architect who nurtures the health of the learning network for collaboration, communication and learning opportunities. This month’s big question asks, “In a Learning 2.0 world, where learning and performance solutions take on a wider variety of forms and where churn happens at a much more rapid pace, what new skills and knowledge are required for learning professionals?”
