Jim Griffin, working as an advisor to Warner Music Group, is partnering with a number of universities to experiment with business models that could provide an answer. At the recent Supernova conference in San Francisco, Knowledge@Wharton spoke with Griffin about his plans for changing the way music is distributed and monetized.
...Tags: Over the past decade, the music industry launched hundreds of lawsuits against consumers in an attempt to halt illegal downloads of digital content. Although many in the industry have backed off from that approach, the challenge remains to

Twitter, SXSW, and Building a 21st Century Business
In case you haven't heard, I interviewed Twitter CEO Evan Williams at the keynote at this year's South By Southwest (SXSW) Interactive Conference on Monday in Austin, Texas.
Another theme of our conversation was focusing on win/wins — a term that's become cheapened to the point of jargon, but try looking at it anew: As Ev described it, Twitter cuts deals with partners only when they think everyone wins — including end-users. So, how was your week? Mine's been interesting.

Which Mobile App Platform Should a Startup Focus on?
It's tempting to go with Apple because of their current sales figures, but in the long run Google is going to be a far less limiting business partner.
In early March at the Mobilex Conference in Chicago, Charles Yim, of Ad Mob explained his company's mobile metrics report : "Android and iPhone users download a similar number of apps every month and spend a similar amount of time using the apps. Difference between Apple As much as startups want to launch their applications across all mobile platforms, it's often more realistic to focus on just one. But which one?

The $25 Million Demo. Yext Scores A Big Round From IVP After TechCrunch50 Debut.
He tried to ignore them and soak in the rest of the conference, but some of them were from people any startup CEO would be foolish to ignore. He took a few meetings with the most serious VCs, and ended up closing a $25 million B round, led by Institutional Venture Partners (which is also an investor in Twitter). IVP partner Dennis Phelps will be joining Yext’s board. Howard Lerman can be a little intense. Fixing Conferences: Six Lessons From the Designers Accord Summit
I've realized that I can't stand conferences. To me, conferences are akin to watching television without Tivo, or going to AAA to get a triptik instead of mapping a journey on Google. Conferences are an old workhorse model--a mix of passive consumption and fluorescent lighting--that is at odds with the seeds of inspiration they are supposed to inspire.
Almost without exception, after each conference I attend, I swear I'll never go again.
But we do need them, or something like them.

Astonishingly Candid Conversations Break Out At The Lobby Conference
“The most value you get out of most conferences are the parties from nine to midnight,” says frustrated August Capital partner David Hornik , complaining that most of the time at events is spent listening to people talk at you. So three years ago he started an invite only, strictly off-record conference aptly named The Lobby . He says the two way conversations are far more valuable, and you only get that at the parties, or outside the event in the lobby.
It’s held in Hawaii each September, and the goal is to have nothing but conversations.
