Danah Boyd: How Technology Makes A Mess Of Privacy and Publicity
Boyd says that privacy is not dead, but that a big part of our notion of privacy relates to maintaining control over our content, and that when we don’t have control, we feel that our privacy has been violated. You need to ease them in, invite them to contribute their content.
They collapsed articulated networks (email) and assumed it was a personal Today at SXSWi, keynote speaker Danah Boyd took the stage to talk about privacy and publicity, and how they intertwine online. Boyd is a Social Media Researcher at Microsoft Research New England, and has studied this

Google Takes Small Steps for Buzz, Points to Big Solutions for Social Networking
Buzz users now have more granular control over what social interactions with content trigger an email sent to their email inboxes and explicit explanations for why each piece of content was sent by email to them. As social networking analyst danah boyd said at the opening talk of SXSW today, privacy online is grounded in user control .

Forwarding Is the New Networking
Michael Schrage recently wrote a post on this site about the importance of forwarding information as a way to enhance network relationships. Forwarding is the new networking. OK, it's not really the new networking, since it's been going on for more than a decade now. He's right about this, although the title — "The Disadvantage of Twitter and Facebook" — is misleading (and inaccurate, since people retweet things all the time — but sadly, editors know that anything with Facebook and Twitter in the title gets a lot of page views and retweets). The fact that you

How to Make Your Network Work for You
Many people turn to networking when they're looking for a job, but the best time to build your network is before you need something; and the best time to keep that network strong is always. Facebook's Own Estimates Show Declining Student Numbers; Now More Grandparents Than High School Users
That's a dramatic change too for a site that began as a network for college students. Instead, Facebook seems determined to push everyone into making their content on the site more public , not less . Tags: Social Network How fickle are kids these days? Just when all the grown ups started figuring out Facebook , college and high school users have declined in absolute number by 20% and 15% respectively in a mere six months, according to estimates Facebook provides to advertisers that were archived for tracking by an outside firm.

Open Content, Enclosure and Conversion
Freedom One point of agreement I think we can find is in our support for 'free content', in the sense of 'freedom' expressed by Richard Stallman. Access to the source code is a precondition for this. The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2). The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements (and modified versions in general) to the public, so that the whole community benefits (freedom 3). Access to the source code is a precondition for this. Now it is evident that by content we don't mean (exactly)

Yes, I know that Facebook and other social networking platforms change the posting paradigm and render practices like forwarding a digital anachronism. You might consider conducting a similar "traffic analysis" and "content review" of your own mailboxes. Tags: Communication Networking Social medi A single question haunts me as I write this:
Will you forward this post to someone you respect?
