Does Your Strategy Rely on a "Pan-Asian Identity"?
While it is only human nature to make generalizations about other cultures, the danger is that in business such thinking creates practical difficulties as well as lost opportunities.
Because countries may differ in how they respond to products and brands, this variation creates chances for companies to gain a new edge over its rival firms. Despite that we sometimes rely on old or "classic" Does a Pan-Asian identity really exist? Outside of Asia, this region is often talked about in sweeping terms.

Bring Power to the Edge
The four fundamental principles of the agile, "edge-based" organization are situational awareness, skills, values, and decision rights.
This thinking has been articulately documented in many places including the excellent book Power to the Edge by David Alberts & Richard Hayes.
What we need is a modular, self-synchronizing system to deal with crises at the edges — as they happen. For instance, special forces teams are able to deal effectively with the most complex and dynamic situations because they have been designed to be able to be extremely agile.

The High Priests of IT — And the Heretics
Today, every enterprise of reasonable size uses general-purpose, Internet-connected computers under the individual control of their operators, because the risks associated with allowing employees the increased latitude that comes with these machines is more than offset by the efficiency gains made by the flexibility and power at the edge.
And yet, the spiritual descendants of the brave heretics who risked everything to compute at the edge have now become the priesthood . Though I've done time in corporate IT — and have even born the CIO title more than once — I've always had more sympathy for the firewall-breaking, virus-toting, data-leaking users than I have for the responsible and sober IT departments that struggle every day to keep the systems running while the users set out to dismantle it.

The Problem of Forced Fun
This sort of thing puts my teeth on edge. They come to Chockees for the atmosphere and the attitude." This sort of thing is routinely excoriated in popular culture. Witness The Office (British and American versions), the comedies of Judd Apatow, the comedic work of Lorne Michaels ( Saturday Night Live ) and Tina Fey ( 30 Rock ) and much of the culture produced by people under 40.
Visitors touring the Zappos headquarters in Las Vegas are greeted noisily . Staffers blow horns and ring cowbells to bid them welcome.

Tomorrow's Talent Networks
In our next post, we'll look at the changes necessary at the organizational level to foster talent networks on the edge. Tags: Organizational culture Strategy Talent managemen It might seem a peculiar time to talk about talent. Aren't most people these days happy just to have their jobs? Amazon and Zappos: A Savvy Deal
I've posted about Zappos before, with an emphasis on the company's one-of-a-kind culture and its now-famous "Offer" that pays new recruits to quit if they don't share the zeal of their fellow Zapponians. According to Hsieh, cutting-edge Zappos handles five thousand old-fashioned telephone calls per day. The Zappos blend of unconventional strategy, exceptional service, It's been one heck of a July for Tony Hsieh, CEO of Internet superstar Zappos.com. A

Managing across Borders and Cultures
Its mission is succinctly captured in its tag line: Managing across borders and cultures . We prepare individuals and institutions to learn, work and communicate across borders and cultures. Through our conferences and events, and leading-edge information and audio visual technology, we work to give new meaning to the concept of distance learning. I was recently invited to join The Levin Institute as a Senior Fellow. The Levin Institute is a new, independent institute within the State University of New York (SUNY) .

Cultural success
The interesting bit was that there were two widely different cultures, and yet each was successful. Normally, we look at the elements of successful learning cultures as providing safety and reward for contributing, acceptance of diversity, and other dimensions . The other culture is similarly committed to quality, but the leader has a much different personality. I’ve been a wee bit busy this week, engaged on two different initiatives involved in improving what the organizations are doing. How could that be?

Innovation, Entrepreneurship and the Evolution of Cities
It clearly takes quite a long time to build such world class universities. Even harder to replicate is the entrepreneurial culture of these universities. Many other top universities have a more ivory tower culture that causes them to be suspicious of anything having to do with commerce.
These two regions have worked long and hard to establish their entrepreneurial culture. Why is it that only a few cities and regions around the world have become successful innovation hubs, even though many have tried? For the last few years I have been intrigued by this
