Knowledge Management, Scientology and Top Trumps…
I had difficulty stopping their game to continue the workshop with them! Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan and big user of social media, and I think it has brought energy, connectivity, serendipity and a real-time edge to the field of knowledge management. A sneak preview of my up-coming column in the next edition of Inside Knowledge …
During my childhood, I wiled away many an hour with school friends and a pack of Top Trumps cards.
All of us are smarter than any of us...

Decisions, decisions. Business decisions.
The shift from training (we tell you what to learn) to learning (you decide what to learn) increases the scope of the director’s job from classes, workshops, and tests to the broad array of networks, communities, meta-learning, and learning culture.
Five years ago, an Information Week survey revealed that “more companies are justifying their ventures not in terms of ROI but in terms of strategic goals… Creating or maintaining a competitive edge was cited most often as the reason for deploying a business application.”

Tips for Building Next Generation Web 2.0 Applications
I've been spending a good amount of time the last several weeks getting ready for the workshop session I'll be giving at Web 2.0 And these are just three of the larger aspects of the many new things taking place in on the 'edge' of the Web today. And that's one of the big reasons we suggested this workshop to help get a snapshot of the current state of the industry to get up to speed on the latest. Expo next week in San Francisco on building next-generation Web 2.0 applications.

BEtreat - a party workshop
Etienne Wenger and I are throwing a birthday workshop in Grass Valley, California. Time is pressing as it runs from 5th - 10th July: a state-of-the art and cutting-edge workshop culminating in a birthday celebration. How many of us are blurring the edges of private and professional? It's a way of sharing our work together and pushing out the envelope. And having fun at the same time. BEtreat In 2008 Ton threw a birthday party for Elmine in Enschede (NL) which they turned into a sort of unconference.

Remote Collaboration
I'm particularly drawing on both personal experience and on experience with the work skills workshops we are offering. At the start of these workshops, we put people into remote work teams. DimDim - Still a little rough around the edges, but a great, free tool. Real-time Document Editing I've had two experiences recently that have really struck me around real-time document editing. My primary interest here are the methods and tools that allow us to work better as part of remote work teams. In other words - How do we collaborate together in remote work teams

Pedagogy First? Whatever.
Come a little closer to the edge. For more information on context, see this wiki page on the subject that I've used at U of Manitoba for workshops (much more detail is required, but I haven't got around to expanding it). In dealing with faculty and instructional designers, a series of almost default phrases are vocalized once technology is mentioned: "We need to start with pedagogy"..."It's It's pedagogy first".

On the Edge
But that’s the whole point - we went out on the edge, practising what we advocate, and failed in so doing. Sometimes it’s cool to live on the edges but for the most part it’s hard work. Our new business venture, TogetherLearn , is an edge model, and it will have its challenges, as does my own work based in rural Canada.
Yesterday we presented our session at Corporate Learning Trends and everything that could go wrong, did. Plan A failed so we switched to Plan B which didn’t work so we made up Plan C that limped along for the hour.

Pursuing Passion
0160; We all know stories about lone inventors who are deeply passionate about their quest and spend much of their lives locked away in their basement workshops tinkering and experimenting with new approaches to driving performance. 0160; It is also why passionate people tend to come together on various edges of our society and business environment – peripheries that are rich in unmet needs and unexploited opportunities. We often talk about passion, but we tend to use it very loosely. 0160; We usually refer to passion in passing – it is rarely the primary focus of
