Apple Patents: Your Next iPhone Doubles as a Walkie Talkie
Apple's putting up iPhone patents at an incredible rate: Two new applications, one for a walkie-talkie-like accessibility feature and another for a spontaneous wireless social network are very sophisticated. What Apple's essentially suggesting is that in future iPhone tech you'd be able to voice-SMS someone, with an electronic voice recognition and generation system handling the data-to-audio conversions at either end. Is iPhone 4 going to be super-awesome?
The first patent has just been uncovered by Apple Insider , and it dates from November.

Lords, ladies and video games
Many of these studies investigate the concerns she has about whether games might be affecting attention spans or whether online communication could be harming the social life of young people, but she seems unwilling to consider any of them. If you want to see my talk, I've put the slides from my talk online as a PowerPoint file and apparently, both sets of slides will appear on the website of the Institute for the Future of the Mind shortly, possible with video as the talks were filmed.
I attended the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Scientific Research in Learning and Education yesterday to discuss "What is the potential impact of technology, such as computer gaming, on the brain?"

Yahoo EVP Ash Patel, One Of the First Yahoos, Announces His Departure
Patel says Yahoo is in a transition period but is building the infrastructure it needs to compete in the future. Everyone is focused on social right now, he says, and so is Yahoo. He says he’s going to take a few months off with his family and start to think about the future this summer. Ash Patel , a senior Yahoo exec and one of the company’s longest serving employees, will shortly be stepping down. His last day will be next Monday.

The Future of Search: Social Relevancy Rank
What was once called social search is now called real-time search, but this time it will really happen. What we are about to get is a Social Relevancy Rank . Whenever you search streams of activity, the results will be ordered not chronologically but by how relevant each is to you based on your social graph. FriendFeed has recently launched a search feature, and so Facebook search must be coming soon.

The Web of Identities: Making Machine-Accessible People Data

Rethinking Social Relevancy Rank: What's Missing?
The future of search almost certainly involves social networks, social graphs, or social filtering in some capacity. Companies will live or die by whether they get the "social" part right: creating the right level of intimacy, trust, reliability, social connectedness, and accuracy in their results listings. Social search. Of course, this specifically means that their user experience must at least meet or, preferably, exceed that of Google's.
