Jevons' Paradox and the Perils of Efficient Energy Use
Executives from Solazyme, Algenol, HP Biopetroleum, Gevo and Coskata took turns explaining how sunlight/sugars/miscanthus/waste products would be converted by algae/microorganisms/yeast into oil/ethanol/isobutanol. It’s a given among Peak Oilers and New Urbanists alike that the imminent and permanent return of high oil prices will send convulsions through the suburban American landscape. But it’s one thing when professional Jeremiahs like James Howard Kunstler preach this to the converted week after week , and something else when the Urban Land Institute and PricewaterhouseCoopers advise

What's Left For Startups At SXSW?
This five-member panel including Jeremiah Owyang, CNET 's Caroline McCarthy, and executives from Microsoft, HP and Comcast should shed some light on how customer support has evolved "in a 140 character world."
It's Monday and that means that the Interactive portion of SXSW is drawing closer and closer to its close tomorrow after a weekend of great talks, panels, parties and overall hoopla. While some of the most fun parts of SXSW may be behind us, there are still a lot of great things to go see in Austin, especially for those in the startup and entrepreneurship communities.

HP Shows Off Its Slate Computer While Revealing A Key Disappointing Detail (Windows)
HP and Dell showed off its slate concepts at CES '10 , but their demo's left us with so many questions. HP's CTO Phil McKinney at least reveals a bit more about his company's offering. But hopefully he's out of the loop a bit and HP actually has more planned for the device. Apple isn't the only company with tablets. Otherwise, the HP Slate will be about as successful as the HP TouchSmart iMac clones.

HP Testing Google Android For Netbooks
When I read this story over at PC World this morning indicating that HP was testing Google’s Android for netbooks, several ideas crossed my mind. The first is that in these times of economic uncertainity, and when PC sales are dropping, HP may be looking for a way to distinguish itself from the pack. Analysts said the move would allow HP to develop a low-cost netbook optimized for wireless networks that provides access I also thought about the fact that Netbook sales would be on the rise because of their lower cost and that systems preloaded with Windows would cost more.

Get HP's Dark-Themed Mini Look on Your Ubuntu Desktop [Featured Desktop]
HP has an Ubuntu-based netbook, the Mini 1000 Mi Edition , that brings a whole new look to Linux laptops. Unless you're rocking a netbook compiled for LPIA (Low Power on Intel Architecture), you can't get the slick looks of HP's custom launcher or other hardware-specific tools. But since everything's based on Ubuntu 8.04, any updated Ubuntu user can grab the basic theme, colors, and backgrounds from HP's remix. Luckily, regular ol' Ubuntu users can put some of the Mini's black-and-blue looks on their desktop. As described by an Ubuntu Forums poster , those keen on a

Get Money for Your Old Tech Gear from HP [Recycling]
HP's Buyback program offers a quote web site where you enter what you've got and find out how much they'll pay you for it. CNET reports: If you find the quote worth your time, mail them your stuff (at your expense) and HP will mail you a check. The cost of that service is taken out of your final check from HP. If your old stuff isn't worth any cash, you can still mail it to HP for recycling if it's an HP or Compaq brand item. Hewlett-Packard launches a new buyback program that will give you money in exchange for your old, working gadgets and gear—any brand of PC, monitor, printer, digital camera, or smartphone that still has some value.
