Applying to Incubators Takes More Than a Great Idea
Burnham reveals that through the process of applying to several incubators, he and his partners realized some early mistakes they had made.
One important lesson they learned through their first set of interviews is that they hadn't talked to anyone but themselves about the idea. Investors and organizations want to see more than a great idea; they want to know you've thought it out and have identified a specific audience that has needs. As the month of March trudges on, we are getting closer each day to spring and eventually summer when numerous startup incubators hold their camps for early-stage companies.

Founding a Startup? Credibility is Your Best Friend
Aberman and his partner Bill Clerico started working on WePay, an online community where groups and organizations can pay each other electronically, back in August of 2008 and have since raised $2 million in funding after participating in Y Combinator 's incubator last summer. If your idea is so great, why haven't you committed to it? We hear a lot about how starting a company takes some serious entrepreneurial DNA with traits like ambition, drive, relentlessness, and above all, passion. But some might argue that these are just the good sounding attributes that can lead to success;

Chatroulette Is 89 Percent Male, 47 Percent American, And 13 Percent Perverts
Even if there were equal numbers of male and female users, males would enter the pool more often and would therefore appear in front of you more often, making the “average session” more likely to contain a male chat partner. So, if you’re looking for women on Chatroulette, be forewarned: you’re more likely to encounter an empty chair .

Wikimedia Strategy: Ideas for Strengthening Online Communities
Our hunting and gathering of ideas for improving community health got a booster shot last month when Wikimedia Foundation executive director Sue Gardner, deputy director Erik Moeller and I had the opportunity to spend the day with Wikipedia's founder, Jimmy Wales as well as with Clay Shirky, adjunct professor in NYU's graduate Interactive Telecommunications Program and author of Here Comes Everybody: The Power of Organizing without Organizations. The subject of the day was the state of the Wikipedia community, and its objective was to generate ideas. For those of you who have been following Wikimedia's open strategy initiative on this blog , you'll know that one of the goals of the work has been to strengthen the health of the Wikipedia community of contributors who create and use its online encyclopedias.

Need Growth Ideas? Ask Everyone
saw plenty of skeptical and curious looks around the room, so I asked how they felt when either ignored when they presented new ideas or, conversely, when they were actually heard and acknowledged. You will identify big ideas that reinvent the future, and you'll come out of today's environment stronger than ever — with employees and customers cheering at home and in the parking lots. Every morning we wake up to scrolls of depressing news: massive layoffs, budget shortfalls, and companies (even industries) collapsing. Once we get to the office, we're part of conversations about

Let’s Kill The CPM
Though it was the only unit that many of our partners accepted, if we didn’t kill it, the industry would have had a very difficult time moving past it. Even senior folks have to try to fight their own system to keep the ideas that they like.
The ensuing turmoil will bring creative thinking, new ideas, and entrepreneurial passion.

SocialMedia Unveils New Interactive Ads, Scores IDG As Partner
Alongside the launch the company has announced that publishing giant IDG is its first partner, and that IDG will be rolling out advertising campaigns and selling customized versions of ‘People Powered Ads’ under its own Amplify banner.
That said, even with the filter options it will likely still take many brands far longer than it should to warm up to the idea of ads customized with user-input, so it may still be a while before this becomes widespread. Social interaction is one of the driving forces behind the web right now, with Twitter and Facebook both growing at phenomenal rates.

IVP partner, and Twitter investor, Todd Chaffee, suggests:
If they were really smart they could partner with Twitter and make Twitter their real-time feed.

And what if all of these thoughts were immediately available in a database that could be mined easily to tell you what people both individually and in aggregate are thinking right now about any imaginable subject or event?
