Decisions, decisions. Business decisions.
Jay Cross examines decision making on learning at work, and gives the lie to some myths about the use of business metrics.
The shift from training (we tell you what to learn) to learning (you decide what to learn) increases the scope of the director’s job from classes, workshops, and tests to the broad array of networks, communities, meta-learning, and learning culture.
Using smart tech to make it easier for workers to collaborate and MAKING BUSINESS DECISIONS: THE HEART AND THE HEAD

Pilots or Beta?
This is quite different from perpetual Alpha, or never getting to something concrete, as Jay Cross commented here several years ago:
and lists five characteristics of great pilots: Enthusiasm; Roles & Functions; Skills; Personality & Network:
Network
The If you take the cynefin approach for working in complex environments you first Probe then Sense and then Respond in order to develop emergent practices . Backward-looking good or best practices are inadequate for changing complex environments.

Favourite Workplace Learning Blogs
don’t like creating “Top 50″ lists so here are my current favourite sources of information and knowledge about learning, especially for the networked business environment. Informal Learning by Jay Cross (US)
Internet Time Blog another one by Jay Cross (US)
This list is a result of a series of tweets, initiated by Janet Clarey who referred to a Top 50 list of educational technology blogs. Shortly after that, Maria Anderson suggested that I create a list for workplace learning .

Follow the Leaders: Sharing Jay Cross' Collected Wisdom
The recent Online Educa International Conference on Technology Supported Learning and Training featured a stream of fascinating workshops in and around informal learning that was organized and facilitated by Jay Cross (author of Informal Learning: Rediscovering the Natural Pathways That Inspire Innovation and Performance .) Note for conference organizers: Titles are everything when you have 10 parallel sessions to choose from, plus the ongoing pull of the cafe or bar for networking; this stream had some of the most provocative titles and they lived up to their promise.)

Leveraging the human network
Chief Learning Officer has published an article on Leveraging Human Networks to Accelerate Learning : “Networks connect diverse people quickly and easily…Networks can withstand stress and adapt quickly to change…Networks contain a small number of people that have proportionately more influence over the network than others.” 8217;m concerned about this article and about recent emphasis on the strictly social network dimension to learning. 8221;

Jay Cross and I recently co-authored this piece for CLO Magazine.
.
Today’s networked era requires a new way to make investment decisions that incorporates intangible assets and more accurately depicts how value is created.
The network era now replacing the industrial age holds great promise. The industrial age has run out of steam. Look at General Motors.

New roles for the networked workplace
Let’s face it, no professional can know everything and is dependent on others for knowledge and expertise, hence the growing need for effective networks in our work and learning. Our networks are becoming all-important in our work and this requires an attitude of openness and collaboration, not the norm in industrial corporations nor command and control organizations.
If you agree The best definition of a professional I’ve seen comes from David Williamson Shaffer, author of How computer games help children learn [not really about children] as:

Personal Learning Environments and personal learning environments
Getting back, I've seen quite a few blog posts on the topic: Stephen Downes - Personal Learning I can talk about webs and networks and personal learnings and PLEs but there's a disconnect unless people see themselves as learners rather than teachers. Stephen seems a bit worried in his post that people in the corporate world don't get the concept. My personalised learning environment includes many aspects of my knowledge network, including my browser favourites, my RSS feeds, my electronic documents and so on. There's been quite a bit of discussion going on around Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) and personal learning environments.
