Game mechanics EVERYWHERE!
We’ve got Nicole Lazzaro , UX-designer-turned-game-designer, who will share insights from her research on game play and connect that to UX practice. I’ve just returned from SXSW Interactive 2010, and perhaps the best talk I saw was Andy Baio’s “Gaming the Crowd, Turning Work Into Play”. He hasn’t yet posted slides or notes, but you can get the gist of the talk from this blog post and these notes .

Design research as the fourth estate
In preparation for teaching the Design Research day of our upcoming UX Intensive in San Francisco, from June 15-18, I’ve been reflecting on the different roles that design research plays in the design process and in the organizations we work with.
One interesting role that design research plays through personas, and other representations of qualitative research findings, is helping businesses escape from their usual organizational frameworks of personality, position, history, and silo dominance. I have seen personas become peace-keepers, in that they allow

New Twitter Research: Men Follow Men and Nobody Tweets
These results are stunning given what previous research has found in the context of online social networks. Bill undertook research for parts of this article in the context of that class.
...Tags: Twitter has attracted tremendous attention from the media and celebrities, but there is much uncertainty about Twitter's purpose. Is Twitter a communications service for friends and groups, a means of expressing yourself freely, or simply a marketing tool?

Fresh research showing the damage of filtering 'real world' technology
Students in schools around the world find that their research, creativity and learning potential is seriously curbed by filtering and lack of use of their own mobile and gaming devices in schools. This comes from research spanning the Americas, brought to my attention by its author, Research Consultant Kim Farris-Berg. Kim got in touch with me to highlight the research she carried out in the summer of 2008, across the USA and swathes of South America and Australia. Filtering of sites they use at home for learning is the number one obstacle for high school students, arguably those in whom we should be able to place more trust thanks to more time learning about how to exploit the web wisely: "In 2007, [filtering] was high school students’ number one obstacle to using technology at their schools (53 percent).

In Market Research, Use Numbers With Caution
The other day one of my clients asked me a deceptively simple question: What is the best market research technique? While of course quantitative surveys can generate important learning, it's dangerous to assume there is any single "best" market research technique.
Quantitative research certainly has its place. It turned out to be a leading question, as he had in his hand an article from a recent article in Inc. that said, "Given limited resources ...

Research Ethics
Blog summary of an NRC-IIT summary on research ethics held in Fredericton on Tuesday. Speakers were given an opportunity to review the text before it was posted, but not to exercise editorial control. Will van den Hoonaard Professor Emeritus, University of New Brunswick Ingeragency Advisory Panel on Research Ethics, Government of Canada ‘Vertical ethics’ is the idea that ethics reviews are being required not only at the project level, but also at the institute level and even by journals and publications.
